Despite the shocking results in the 2015 General Election, resulting in the effective decimation of the LibDem representation in parliament, membership of the Liberal Democrats has rocketed.
At a national level, over 10,000 new members joined the LibDems in the week immediately following the General Election 1. Although we don’t have exact figures, the regional Yorkshire & Humber party has seen a similar proportional increase.
But here at the Doncaster Liberal Democrats, we have seen our membership figures more than double since the General Election.
The president of the Liberal Democrats, Sal Brinton, has attributed the surge in membership to the “liberal fightback”. “People were devastated by the results last week, but rather than sit back and lick their wounds, people have been invigorated and inspired,” she said 2.
The Liberal Democrats is in the middle of a period of recovery and change. There has never been a better time to join the party and make a difference for Doncaster, the region, and the country.
